Look Them in the Face

“In Dorothy L. Sayer’s novel Gaudy Night one of the characters recalls the extempore prayer of a well-meaning but incoherent curate, heard once and never forgotten, “Lord, teach us to take our hearts and look them in the face, however difficult it may be.” Taking our hearts and looking them in the face is the essence of the wilderness experience. It doesn’t require sand and rocks, only sufficient silence for us to become aware of what we really feel, below the surface-stream, shallow and light of what we say we feel.”
