“Empathy is the ability to tune in to and understand another’s perspectives and feelings.  Empathy is one of the central features of emotional intelligence (Daniel Goleman – Emotional Intelligence – New York: Bantam, 2005) and is comprised of three different variants: 

  1. Cognitive empathy, a natural curiosity about other people’s reality and the ability to understand another person’s perspective and how they think;
  2. Emotional empathy, the ability to intuit another person’s feelings through an actual visceral sense; and,
  3. Empathetic concern, a genuine call to action on someone else’s behalf – it is, in essence, compassion in action.”
